What Is IBS and How Can It Be Treated?

A common condition that affects the digestive system, Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) causes stomach cramps, bloating, diarrhea and constipation. Usually a lifelong diagnosis, IBS can develop after a severe bout of diarrhea (gastroenteritis) caused by bacteria or a virus. Early life stress, like that which occurred in your childhood, can also be a factor, as well as a surplus of bacteria in the intestines.

With so much information out there about IBS, how do you know which treatment is right for you? The Elysian team can help.

Symptoms of IBS

The main symptoms of IBS are stomach pains or cramps. These usually worsen after eating and feel better after a bowel movement. Bloating can also occur, leaving your stomach feeling uncomfortably full and swollen.

Symptoms of IBS include:

  • Abdominal pain or cramps

  • Bloating

  • Bowel movements that are harder or looser than usual

  • Diarrhea, constipation or alternating between the two

  • Excess gas

  • Mucus in fecal matter

These symptoms tend to come and go over time and can last for days, weeks or months.

How We Can Help Manage Your IBS

Although IBS isn't curable, treatment can help ease symptoms. Our Registered Dietitian, Brette Macey, will be receiving her certification in IBS through Monash University in September 2022.

As IBS is a complicated diagnosis, Brette’s certification will allow her to specialize further in gut health. Providing interventions and information, certification allows Macey to support patients within Elysian so that they don’t have to see another dietitian for treatment options.

With under 15 dietitians certified in B.C., Elysian patients will soon be able to receive more information, resources, and tools to manage this complicated condition. Therapies may include medicines and supplements, changes to the diet and lifestyle, mind and body techniques, as well as exercise.

A true partner in your health and wellness, working with a dietitian can help you achieve your health goals. Book with Brette Macey online or by calling 604.256.4112.
