Diet and Exercise Concerns? South Surrey's New DEXA SCAN Is Here
The wait is over! Elysian Health’s new DEXA SCAN has arrived and with it, the ability to measure your body composition.
What does the scan do?
A DEXA SCAN is an imaging test that measures your body composition, a.k.a your resting metabolic rate. It’s a form of X-ray that figures out the distribution of muscle, fat, and bone across your whole body, resulting in a measurement that’s based on your lean tissue mass.
Many people get this test done every few years, especially as they age, to keep tabs on their overall wellness.
Note: When going in for a scan wear comfortable clothing. Depending on the area being scanned, we may ask you to remove any clothing with metal fasteners, zippers, or hooks.
Why your Basal Metabolic Rate is important
Knowing your Basal Metabolic Rate provides helpful details about how many calories you should be eating in order to meet your health goals. If you want to lose weight, you’d eat less than your BMR. To gain weight, you’d eat more.
A rough, average, guide for BMR is around 1600 calories for men and 1400 calories for women, per day. Take this information lightly, as much of it depends on the distribution of muscle, fat and bone across the whole body. That’s where the scan comes in!
Getting regular tests done with a DEXA SCAN gives you results that will be summarized to help you set specific diet and exercise goals on your journey to living your best life, longer.
