Sleep Supplements: Do They Really Work?

Getting consistent sleep is incredibly important for our health, and unfortunately, many people struggle to both fall asleep and stay asleep on a regular basis. It’s no surprise then that over-the-counter sleep supplements are a popular way to help regulate sleep habits. But do they really work?

Our Chief Pharmacy Officer, Richard Cote, weighs in.

Sleep Supplements

What are sleep supplements?

Sleep supplements are natural-based medications that are often herbal in nature and are derived from plants or plant products. Some common sleep supplements include melatonin, valerian, and GABA. You can take these supplements often in a pill, tincture, or tea format, and they’re a common substitute for prescription medications.

Do they really work?

You can rest assured that sleep supplements are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Many, like melatonin, work to calm your nervous system and increase your body’s natural ability to fall asleep and stay asleep. Melatonin supplements the body's natural production of this naturally occurring, which is an already naturally occurring hormone in your body used to regulate your circadian rhythm.

Which are most recommended?

It’s always best to introduce one supplement at a time so that you can really see if it’s working for you or not. Richard recommends trying out one supplement form for 2-4 weeks before switching things up. While supplements such as CBD are still newer on the market, those such as melatonin and valerian root are among the most commonly used.

What are other ways to improve sleep?

Fixing your sleep through supplements shouldn’t be your only method of practice. Try also limiting your daytime naps, exercising, using light to your advantage, and setting a good bedroom temperature to make sleep less of a struggle.
